7 Benefits of Pushing More Investment Into School Energy Efficiency

Public Schools are WASTINGSchools-wasting-money-on-energy 25-30% on Energy Costs

According to the Department of Energy Energy Start Program,  it is very possible for public schools to realize 25-30% savings.
Why wait?

Who Pays For The Utilities For Public Schools?

$7.5 Billion, the cost of providing energy to our schools. A 25-30% reduction in that cost would be roughly $2.25 Billion per year.  Not bad!

What would it mean for our economy to have an extra $2.25 Billion per year going to pay for INEFFICIENT school buildings?

Who pays for this? I am sure you already know the answer to this question.

The school may be writing the check, but the American taxpayer is footing the bill through taxes.  The American taxpayer doesn't have the money to put into the economy if they have to pay additional taxes on unnccessary energy costs.

Green Is Part of the Obama Jobs Plan, But Does It Go Far Enough?

Back in September, there was a proposal to increase the efficiency in schools.  "President Obama’s jobs proposal...calls for a $25 billion effort to modernize at least 35,000 public schools — and making them greener is part of the plan."  (source: www.thehill.com)

At least 35,000 public schools is a great start, but that is only 30% of all the public schools in the US.

Obama Job Plan Should Include Making ALL Schools Energy Efficient

Just investing in energy efficiency in our schools alone, would leave Billions of dollars in the pockets of Americans.

Right now that money is just being wasted, sent off to the utilities each and every month.

According to the EnergyStar website, it is very possible to save 25-30% on energy costs in public schools.

So what are we waiting for?

Elected officials need to get off their behinds and act on initiatives that have proven benefits and don't line the pockets of a just a few and help the American Taxpayer for the long run.

An investment in energy efficiency would pay dividends for years and years.  That $2.25 Billion wouldn't be a one time savings....that is ANNUAL savings!

That savings would accumulate year after year. Energy Efficiency retrofits would be a great way to boost the economy.

There are Several Benefits To Improving the Schools, here are 7 of them:

  1. It would create jobs by doing the retrofits
  2. Be good for manufacturing, specifically the lighting industry
  3. Reduce school districts costs which means they could operate with less money
  4. Less money means they wouldn't have to collect as much in taxes
  5. Paying less taxes for the American taxpayer means more money in our pockets
  6. With more money in our pockets, we are likely to put that back into the economy in one form or another.
  7. $2.25 Billion is ANNUAL savings; so if the life of the new system was 10 years, that would be a total of $22.5 Billion over 10 years.  That is A LOT of wasted money.

Instead, the wasted energy expense, 30% of $7.5 Billion or $2.25 Billion per year is being sent to the utilities.

What Would An Extra $22.5 Billion Injected Into Our Economy Over the Next 10 years mean to our economy?
